Both of the photos of the Disneyland Alweg Monorail shown on this page used to be on display in the offices of the Alweg Company in Seattle. By now the colors of these photos have already faded, but these photos are part of the many personal memories the author of these Alweg Archives has of his father's years as engineer for the Alweg Company.
Die beiden Fotos der Disneyland Alweg Monorail auf dieser Seite hingen stets im Büro der Firma Alweg in Seattle. Inzwischen sind diese Fotos, wie man sieht, schon verblichen, doch sie gehören mit zu den vielen persönlichen Erinnerungen des Verfassers dieser Alweg Archives an die Arbeit seines Vaters als Ingenieur der Firma Alweg.

In the late 1950s the Disney Corporation - after Walt Disney had in 1958 personally seen the first full-scale test train and had then sent Disney engineers to the Cologne test site - developed together with Alweg a scaled down Alweg line for its California Disneyland. Inaugurated in June 1959, it was an immediate success and the Disney Corporation to this day has continuously upgraded the original Alweg concept. - The American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1986 declared the Disney Monorail in Disneyland in Anaheim, California, as a NATIONAL HISTORIC MECHANICAL ENGINEERING LANDMARK. The Disneyland-Alweg Monorail is therefore listed in the ASME list of landmarks to be found on their website . Apart from historical data this website also offers interesting links to other websites that offer information about the Disney monorail systems. A search for "Disney Monorail" in the internet will give an approximate idea of how popular it is in the United States.

The "Disney-chapter" of the Alweg history is an ambivalent one. On the one hand Alweg's 1959 excursion to Disneyland supplied Alweg critics with the argument that monorail is "kidstuff" for theme parks only. An argument that to this day is used by monorail opponents and that keeps resurfacing in reports by journalists and other self-proclaimed experts. On the other hand Alweg's Disney adventure introduced the Alweg concept to America, where technical innovation was and is always received more enthusiastically than in Europe.
Despite the murmurings of monorail critics the Disney monorails quickly became an American favorite!
The modern Disney monorails in California, Florida and in the newest resort near Tokyo, Japan, prove themselves day in and out in service that is just as strenuous as city transit. The performance and the popularity of the American Disneyland and Disney World monorails have even led the Alweg monorail concept to Las Vegas, where since 2004 the Bombardier-built Las Vegas Monorail is in service.
So the "Disney-chapter" that may in its day have hurt the Alweg Company's chances for success has afterall brought new horizons for the vision of the Alweg concept !

Im Jahre 1958 besuchte Walt Disney im Rahmen einer Europareise auch das Versuchsgelände der Alweg-Bahn in Köln-Fühlingen. Das Alweg-Konzept soll ihn sofort begeistert haben und er wollte solch eine Bahn in seinem noch neuen Disneyland* in Kalifornien haben. Aus dieser Begeisterung entstand eine Zusammenarbeit zwischen den Firmen Alweg und Disney und zusammen mit Alweg-Ingenieuren wurde das DISNEYLAND ALWEG MONORAIL SYSTEM entwickelt. Die Züge wurden in Amerika von Disney gebaut. Am 14. Juni 1959 wurde die erste Disneyland-Alweg Strecke feierlich in Betrieb genommen.
Die in verkleinertem Maßstab gehaltenen Züge wurden blitzschnell bei den Besuchern des Disneyland* beliebt. Die erste Strecke wurde schon bald ausgebaut und die "Monorail" gehört seither bis zum heutigen Tage zu den (mit von der Firma Disney ständig technisch weiterentwickelten Zügen) Lieblingsattraktionen von Disneyland*.
Als später in Florida Disneyworld* gebaut wurde, wurde auch dort eine Monorail installiert. Die Strecke wurde teilweise doppelbalkig ausgebaut. Fahrgastaufkommen und Zugfrequenz entsprechen hier durchaus Gegebenheiten, wie sie auch im regulären Nah- und Stadtverkehr anzutreffen sind. Die Disney-Ingenieure verwirklichten in Florida zudem eine der klassischen Alweg-Visionen, indem die Strecke dort direkt durch ein Hotel geführt wird, das mit einer großzügigen Monorail-Station ausgestattet wurde.
Disneys Umsetzung und Einsatz des Alweg-Einschienenbahnsystems sorgte für einen großen Bekanntheitsgrad der Alweg-Bahn. Man hatte sich damals bei Alweg über das Disney-Projekt gefreut, musste aber schnell erkennen, dass dadurch vielerorts die Alweg-Bahn als eine Bahn für Vergnügungsparks angesehen wurde. Damit hatte man ungewollt bei Ausschreibungen für echte Nahverkehrssysteme den Mitbewerbern von der konventionellen Zweischienen-Industrie dieses negativ behaftete "Vergnügungsparkbahn-Argument" geliefert.
Besonders aus dieser Sicht ist es schade, dass der Disney-Konzern nicht mehr aus seinen Einschienenbahn-Erfahrungen gemacht hat, um dem Konzept Einschienenbahn generell zu mehr Erfolg zu verhelfen (abgesehen von einem leider erfolglosen Vermarktungsversuch für Stadtbahn-Anwendung Ende der 1980er Jahre). Denn unbestritten ist, dass die Alweg-Bahn auch durch Disney weltberühmt wurde und sie dank Disney auch heute noch Millionen von Besuchern jahraus, jahrein begeistert. Auch im neuen Disney-Park in Japan (bei Tokio) verkehrt wieder eine Monorail, deren hochmoderne Züge, hier sogar im 1:1 Maßstab gebaut, und fantastischen Bahnhöfe das Erlebnis einer Fahrt mit einer Einschienenbahn um neue Dimensionen bereichern.
Interessant ist, dass sowohl Dr. Wenner-Gren als auch Walt Disney als Unternehmer Visionen einer Welt hegten, in der die Technik auf ästethische Art und Weise zum Wohle des Menschen eingesetzt werden sollte. In Disneyworld* in Florida wird diese Vision konsequent unter dem Begriff "EPCOT"* dargestellt, der eine Abkürzung für "Experimental Prototype Community of Tommorrow" ist (wörtlich: Experimentelle Prototypgemeinde von Morgen"). In dem Teil des Florida-Parks, der sich mit der "Welt der Zukunft" ("Future World") befasst, wirkt auch die Einschienenbahn wie das ideale Verkehrsmittel einer modernen Welt. Vergleicht man die Streckenführung, zum Beispiel durch das große "Contemporary Resort Hotel" hindurch oder vorbei am "Raumschiff Erde Pavillon" so bieten sich Motive, die an die kühnen Zeichnungen erinnern, die die Alweg-Planer einst in ihren Werbebroschüren skizzierten.

In Sachen Disney und Disney-Monorails bietet das Internet unzählige Informationsquellen (einschließlich vieler Foto- und Videoberichte von Besuchern der Disney-Parks). Oft ist allerdings nicht auf Anhieb auszumachen, ob es sich um offizielle Seiten der Disney Corporation handelt oder um aufwendig gestaltete Fan-Seiten.

In 1986 The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) declared the Disneyland Alweg System to be a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark. On its website the ASME therefore lists the Disneyland Monorail and the corresponding page includes links to websites that deal with the Disney Monorails.
Im Jahre 1986 nahm die American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) die Disneyland Alweg-Bahn in ihre Liste "National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmarks" auf. | A note on popular futuristic design made in Italy during the 1950s: in 1952/1953 the Italian State Railways (FS) introduced their legendary "Settebello" electric train units (ETR 300) that featured streamlined front-end units with panorama seating for passengers up front, while the driver had his place behind this front-compartment looking through a large canopy in the roof. This design development in 1961 also characterized the Alweg train that the Alweg Company built for the Turin, Italy, Expo "Italia 61" (see the Turin-page of the German Alweg Archives pages). The book also describes and illustrates Alweg's role in transportation history, showing that the Alweg concept is - despite experts' opinions to the contrary - still very much alive and retains, thanks to its timeless modernity, a very bright future !
