MY ALWEG SUMMER JOB
It was in Seattle back in the summer of 1965. Hard times had already beset the American section of the Alweg Company, because funds from the Wenner-Gren estate were flowing only sporadically. So Alweg America urgently needed a new contract to survive. Not even a handful of people was still working in the Seattle office in the Orpheum Building (on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Stewart Street; the building was demolished in 1967; today this is the location of the spectacular 47-story twin-tower Westin Hotel), - one of the last Alweg engineers left was my father.
Once again, as so often in the history of the Alweg Company, an interested party had announced its visit to inform itsself about what exactly the Alweg Monorail was. The Seattle Alweg Monorail had already been given free of charge to Seattle's "Century 21 Center, Inc.", but of course the Alweg Company continued to use it as a prestige line that it could demonstrate to visitors and prospective clients.
Even though this imposing and successful demonstration line lay literally speaking on the office doorstep on Fifth Avenue, it was decided to put up an Alweg model layout in the Alweg office using the then commercially available Schuco Disneyland Alweg-Monorail toy models. My father shuddered at the thought of this, because he did not consider this to be a very professional presentation. But he was "overruled".
Since back then I was already known as an industrious model railroader and model builder and because this was summer vacation time, I was allowed to help build this demonstration layout. Sadly there was enough space then in the Alweg office because almost all of the employees had been dismissed or had left voluntarily. Two orphaned office desks served as supports for a large board on which the Schuco layout was to be built.
I do not recall, who had originally procured these Schuco sets and parts for Alweg (maybe they had been intended as company gifts ?). In any case there were a number of these colorful train-sets, in addition to extra beams, switches, powerpacks and electrical accessories. With these well designed Schuco-system parts an extensive layout was quickly set up. I disliked that on this layout-board there was nothing else, but the beamway line. Therefore I proposed to build stylized blocks of high-rise buildings from the thick drawing carton sheets that were amply available in the Alweg office. Rows of windows could be applied with pencil.

Es war in Seattle im Sommer 1965 gewesen. Für den amerikanischen Teil der Firma Alweg waren bereits schwere Zeiten angebrochen, denn Gelder aus dem Wenner-Gren-Nachlaß flossen nur noch sporadisch. Alweg-Amerika brauchte also dringend einen neuen Auftrag, um zu überleben. Nicht mal eine Handvoll Mitarbeiter arbeitete damals noch im Seattle-Büro, im Orpheum Building (Ecke Fifth Avenue und Stewart Street; das Gebäude wurde 1967 abgerissen; heute steht dort das spektakuläre zwei-türmige Westin Hotel mit 47 Stockwerken), - einer der letzten Alweg-Ingenieure dort war mein Vater.
Wieder einmal, wie so oft in der Alweg-Geschichte, hatten sich Interessenten angekündigt, die sich genau über die Alweg-Bahn informieren wollten. Die Seattle-Alweg-Bahn war von der Firma Alweg inzwischen kostenlos an Seattles "Century 21 Center, Inc." übertragen worden, doch natürlich diente sie der Firma Alweg weiterhin als Vorzeigestrecke, die Besuchern und Interessenten vorgeführt wurde.
Obwohl diese imposante und erfolgreiche Demonstrationsstrecke sprichwörtlich vor der Bürotür an der Fifth Avenue verlief, hatte man sich in den Kopf gesetzt, im Alweg-Büro eine Alweg-Modellstrecke mit den damals als Spielzeug erhältlichen Schuco Disneyland Alweg-Monorail Modellen aufzubauen. Meinem Vater grauste es vor diesem Vorhaben, weil er das für wenig professionell hielt. Aber er wurde "überstimmt".
Da ich damals schon als emsiger Modellbahner und Modellbauer bekannt war und gerade Sommerschulferien waren, durfte ich beim Bau der Demonstrationsanlage helfen. Platz war ja leider genug im Alweg-Büro, da die meisten Mitarbeiter entlassen worden oder freiwillig gegangen waren. Zwei verwaiste Schreibtische dienten also als Auflagefläche für ein großes Brett, auf dem die Schuco-Bahn aufgebaut werden sollte.
Wer diese Schuco-Monorails einst für Alweg beschafft hatte, weiß ich nicht mehr (vielleicht sollten es Werbegeschenke sein ?). Auf jeden Fall gab es mehrere der bunten Zugpackungen, extra Fahrbalken, Weichen, Trafos und elektrisches Zubehör. Eine umfangreiche Strecke war mit dem gut durchdachten Schuco-System schnell aufgebaut. Mich störte, dass auf dem großen Brett nur die Balkenstrecke stand, sonst nichts. Ich schlug vor, aus dem im Büro im Überfluß vorhandenen dicken Zeichenkarton stilisierte Hochhausblöcke zu bauen. Fensterbänder konnte man mit Bleistift aufbringen.
